Uusi outo asia

The six-work series Uusi outo asia is situated at the boundary between experience and language. The works draw inspiration from the totemic aesthetics of premodern folk mysticism as well as from surrealist and futuristic Soviet animations of the 1970s. The title of the series refers to a moment in which things exist between the familiar and the alien—simultaneously ancient and futuristic. The works in the exhibition appear as if they have emerged into a strange place and time: they seek to form relationships not only with the viewer but also with one another and with the surrounding space. The works are at rest, yet they are not silent or passive.

Felix Siivonen (b. 1986, Helsinki) works primarily with fibers such as cellulose and wool. A key point of departure in his practice is the intermediate space between perception and interpretation, where human experience gropes beyond linguistic structures and stable systems of reference. He has previously studied communication, political science, and ecosemiotics, and is currently studying sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki.
