Flower meadows have long fascinated Perttu Mäkelä. For years, he has been planting flower meadows at his cottage for bees and butterflies, and gradually the flowers and plants, along with their companions, have made their way onto his canvases.
The meadows have drawn Mäkelä on a journey into the world of plants, blossoms, and butterflies. The colors and rhythms of the flower meadows increasingly appear in his paintings in abstract forms and layered compositions.
For Perttu Mäkelä, the meadows and his paintings are a space in which he expresses his inner experiences. They have become a refuge and a counterbalance to the busyness of everyday life.
Mäkelä works with acrylic paints, crayons, and colored pencils on both primed and unprimed canvas. Like the meadows, his paintings are for him a space where one can breathe and express inner observations and feelings.
Perttu Mäkelä (b. 1979, Helsinki) is currently studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki. His work moves between figurative and abstract painting. Occasionally, familiar elements such as plants or blossoms can be discerned in his paintings, but they remain part of a larger abstract fabric. For him, painting serves both as a journey of exploration and as a means to quiet the noise of everyday life.
